Awesome! Online PC Support

There is an old saying “Dream as if youll live forever, live as if youll die today” but it inspired me a lot and I purchased an hp desktop at the age of 60 by breaking my some fixed deposits, when most of the guys lead a miserable life. I was pretty much enthusiastic regarding the machine and the installed applications including a series of pogo games. Well it was not my solitary decision I did it for the interest of my grandson, who just turned off No. 6 candle, on his Big B’ day Cake.

Last week I went for a tour and when I came back I found him really sad. When asked about he replied very honestly “Grandfather nothing is fine, I haven’t played since you left for the tour”. I assured him don’t worry dear im back and we will handle the things soon and will get everything fixed and smooth. I tried to get power on the hp system and found that it’s getting frequent restart on its own. I called up the phone number of an online PC support company to diagnose the computer problem. Very soon I was connected to a technician. After some formalities and a bit of information sharing about the occurrence of the problem he instructed me to start the Hp computer in safe-mode. Afterwards, he gave me a link and said that your system is virus infected and it needs to be scanned with a compatible virus scanner tool. He gave me a web-link and told me to download and execute the program on your system to make if virus-free.

I downloaded the virus removal tool on my system and run the program to perform the task. The software worked well and it took 10 minutes to accomplish the job. It was a good experience of self-troubleshooting. When I got the ‘Finish’ button I cheered up with joy. I clicked on the tab and restarted the machine. My grandson jumped up saying “Fantastic!  We closed the deal.” Now, my system was working well, I saw the charming smile of the little kid back, my inner voice thanked the great tech support!

HPs Print Apps Store update

A month ago I posted about the opening of HPs Printer App store (see "Printer Apps Store Launches"), and also added a first-look at the selection of apps available (see "Day One -- HP Ushers in New Era of Consumer Printing with Full Suite of Print Solutions").

Microsoft made news this week with the opening of their app store (see "Windows mobile app store, My Phone service officially opening"), albeit unlike HP and the same as the king-of-the-hill Apple iPhone app store, their effort is dedicated to phones and mobile devices. With Apples number of apps recently reaching close to six figures, with over two billion downloads (see "85,500 iPhone apps, 2 billion downloads") its easy to see Microsofts nascent effort, with over 100 apps, as a reverse of the Windows/Mac days in terms of the overwhelming ratio of applications. But, even in a totally different category, how is the HP Print Apps store measuring up?

As compared to a month ago, the HP Print Apps section of the HP Creative Studio is now featuring 15 print apps, up from 14 last month (see Screen Shots above). The most popular seems to be the app from Coupons.com, with a total of nine user comments to date, average a 4+ star rating.

While web printers versus mobile phones may be an apples-to-oranges comparison (pun acknowledged but not intended), it would seem HP has a long way to go to be in the company of Microsoft apps store (acknowledged as about the sixth entry in the race), let alone the leader.

HP NYSE HPQ celebrates 20 years of Deskjet

HP (NYSE HPQ) is out with an intriguing release this morning, touting the twentieth anniversary of the introduction of the original HP Deskjet printer. The company is also using the occasion to announce two new Deskjet printers, the HP Deskjet D2500 Printer Series and HP Deskjet F4200 All-in-One Series. The announcement of the new printers includes elements that HP has been emphasizing lately, including Green-related benefits like low power consumption and cartridge recycling options, multiple sizes of cartridges for low-purchase-price and lower-cost-per-page preferences, and better printing from the Internet, as "all new HP Deskjet printers feature the HP Smart Web Printing tool for simple, predictable printing from the web." (See "Smart Web Printing reviewed in WSJ".)

Industry historians, too, will find the 20-year history of the Deskjet quite interesting. Its a timeline with much more detail than most similar pieces include. Must study!

Interesting too, despite the focus on the Deskjet, is the news focus on expanding to retail photo printing, an example being the AP story by Amanda Fehd, "HP Looks to Stores for Inkjet Expansion". Theres a tone that home photo printing is in major decline, its golden age having passed some time ago. Im not sure Id be quite so harsh.
Five to seven years ago, the majority of digital photos were printed in the home, according to Federico De Silva, an analyst with Gartner. Now 60 percent are printed at retail outlets.

Printing updates from HP Analyst Summit

Boston, March 6, 2013 - Were well into the HP Analyst Summit I covered here yesterday, with general sessions featuring CEO Meg Whitman and her executive team. We are now getting ready to switch to 1:1s and demos, but a quick recap-so-far seems in order. And since the NDA all analysts signed was fairly specific about not disclosing details during the summit (with the Twitter feed, using #HPSummit, being somewhat of an exception so far), I thought I would offer an anthology-style post with some of my HP printing-and-imaging oriented posts and articles from the last month or so. I hope this will suffice until we are greenlighted on more summit news!

The joy of printers!

Ive been avoiding these hands-on posts for awhile, and when I do one, I generally try to stay clear of HP products and solutions (emphasis on try). Regular readers know Im an HP (NYSE HPQ) alum (1981-2005), and as an analyst/writer covering the printer industry for The Hard Copy Observer, I cant get around covering the leader, Hewlett Packard. But even then, I tend to stick to covering things from the big-picture, business-strategy standpoint.

But...I have to report some rather joyful printer experiences I have had just recently. I purchased an Officejet Pro 8000 at a ridiculously (at least to me) low price from Newegg.com, plugged it right into my home LAN (Ethernet), and have been happily printing away -- reports, articles, papers -- ever since. And the ink monitor (via the printers web page) shows miserly amounts of those precious liquids having been spilled, after several hundred pages of documents and photos. Everything has worked flawlessly, I am so pleased to report!

And while the printer itself doesnt feature WiFi, like so many HPs do these days (see "HP is wild about wireless"), my Apple iPhone picked up its presence immediately, using HPs iPrint Photo (v 1.0.3) (see "iPhone Printing boom"). Im now even using my iPhone as a photo print server/director, of sorts, moving photos from other sources to the phone, and then to the photo printer.

And by the way, in the recently more sensitive full-disclosure department (see "FTC Publishes Final Guides Governing Endorsements, Testimonials -- Changes Affect Testimonial Advertisements, Bloggers, Celebrity Endorsements"), all the products mentioned here were either paid for, by me, or offered free.

March Observations Where Are They Now – The Printed Blog

Observations: Where Are They Now? – The Printed Blog
by Jim Lyons

I had been planning to write another “Where Are They Now” column for some time now, about some of the companies covered in this column (Observations) over the past five years. But the news in late March about Shutterfly’s acquisition (for over $300 million) of online stationery supplier Tiny Prints really motivated me! And though I could have sworn I had written about them (Tiny Prints) previously, a search of both the Observer archives as well as this blog’s past postings turned out negative. I usually dont let many companies or products with “print” or something related in their names go unnoticed, but, alas, Tiny Prints crossed my mental radar but didn’t make it as a story. But fortunately, there is another one that did, multiple times, and who is due for a re-visit.

The Printed Blog is the subject of this column, and it’s currently another success story that if not yet on the scale of Tiny Prints, is heading in that direction. This is a company which has gone from darling, to dead, to alive again and is doing some great things and on the verge of others. I recently talked to the founder and CEO Joshua Karp about whats new, and whats different from their first time around, about two years ago.

That was when The Printed Blog first caught my attention (see “The Printed Blog – Ultimate Counter Trend?”, April 2009), along with many others including the mainstream media, two years ago their idea to do a localized newspaper-like printed product that included “great blog content” along with local news and information on goings-on. They got off to a quick start in several cities, however less than six months later they had suspended operation as the advertiser-supported model broke down. But another year or so later they were back in business, with an altered business model, which I again faithfully reported as part of my “From the Magazine Rack” wrapup in August 2010.

I hadn’t had the chance to get the latest directly from the source until recently, however, so in a brief but high-bandwidth conversation with Karp, I got the latest to share with JLO readers. In looking back, Karp first talked about his inspiration from a talk by Dell CEO Michael Dell, which he heard ten or more years ago, and Dell’s point that great entrepreneurs know when to give up. (But then he also adds parenthetically, “Great entrepreneurs are also extremely tenacious!”) By tweaking the business model, Karp was able to come back, and grow again. Now a weekly magazine, altered from the daily newspaper model of the previous iteration, and purely subscription-based relying on mailing centrally printing issues. Karp explains, comparing the original model and its “local community-focused content, which was originally a daily with hyper-local content written for them, combined with the more general blog content of national interest” to now the more broadly-applicable magazine-style format. His inspiration continues to come from, in his judgment, the “tremendous amount of blog content, that could or should be produced in paper form, in blogs.” And it’s still based on another primary concept – the level playing field. In a recent issue, for example, “We had (communications expert and pundit) Jeff Jarvis, and some of his writing, right next to the work of unknowns. This proves the point, if you produce something worth reading – it will be read.”

In terms of numbers, Karp was very candid about this latest Printed Blog incarnation. “We are currently [late March 2011] at the tail-end of our first subscription drive with 3,000 paying subscribers. We are 3-4 weeks away from reaching or exceeding our subscriber goals. We are currently on our 5th of 6 promotional issues, and we expect to sail right past our goals with a combination of weekly and monthly subscribers. We see being at five figures by the end of the year.”

Local Printing Option

Going back 2009, but I wanted to know what had happened to the “local printing” option in covered in our original interview? In that two-year-old column, I described Karp’s vision as follows: “As far as printing details, local print shops currently produce TPB, but the vision includes many partners who will do their own printing along with local distribution and advertising through local offices, storefronts, and even home offices. The printing devices they deploy may be branded ‘The Printed Blog’ but will be based on printers from Canon, HP, Xerox, and others.” He now states that while that hasn’t become reality, and the business has gone in a different direction, it still has merit.

International Licensees

And another exciting development? Karp has two international licensees to talk about. “This is relatively recent, just in the past 4-6 weeks, we have licensing groups which have formed around the world. In Saint Petersburg, Russia

a group is up to production of 50,000 copies of relevant Russian content. Their license to pertains to all of Russia. And a second license will be to a group in Portugal, to be official in the next few days – with their publication launching on Liberty Day – it’s a combination of advertiser supported plus subscription model – and they have already lined up big advertisers. The two groups of licensees are quite different, with young entrepreneurs in Russia, and seasoned media professionals in Portugal, who want to spread TPB across Europe, publishing the world’s most successful photogs and bloggers.”

Topsheet.com

And as far as more new ideas? Karp offered in a follow-up email, “We also launched a new daily print newspaper called The Top Sheet - we tested it in December, and well be launching it any day now. If youre interested, you can learn more at www.thetopsheet.com.”

Never short of new ideas, Joshua Karp and the Printed Blog, originally inspired by a speech by Michael Dell, now inspires many of us in the print industry to be persistent and creative. I firmly believe this is not my last column about the Printed Blog and their habit of zagging when it seems like all the rest of the world is zigging.

Green Printing 1995 Version

Summers respite is over, and its nice to be back in the office and doing a little blogging!

While cleaning out a few of the archives over the break, I happened on an old (Winter 1995) copy of Windows Magazine, including a page featuring me, addressing nothing other than one of the current-day favorite topics, Green Printing. Check it out in the graphic above.

No wonder I continue to enjoy covering this topic -- Ive got green roots! And for historians like me, a quick check reveals Windows Magazine ended its run in 1999, but its publisher, CMP, lives on as United Business Media, and continues with its stable of pubs such as Information Week and CRN.

HP NYSE HPQ rolls out Enterprise Printing products services

Affirming their laser-like focus (pardon the pun) on the Enterprise Space commented on here in the recent past (for a recent example see "More from HP on Q1 printer business"), HP (NYSE HPQ) today announced a group of new printers, an enterprise-level scanner (the Scanjet N9120, see above), and a variety of new services.

The products and services are aimed at the evolving needs of enterprises (or, as the press release spells out, "large businesses"), and while its good to see at the core a group of printers and scanners -- always comforting as an anchor to the story for those in the press and analyst community -- in addition to the services, especially as related to security and "assessments", which are featured front and center as well.

Also integrated are updates on HPs Green Printing message (this time its a new energy-saving toner formulation, after yesterdays environment announcement regarding cooperative efforts with the State of California); the Enterprise portion in the $300-million marketing campaign around "Print 2.0" (see "HPs $300 Million Campaign") which will feature "What do you have to say?" as the tag line; and the closing of the Exstream software deal (see "Exstream Printing").

Kudos to HP for not only pursuing the Enterprise Printing space with persistence and vigor, but also to their communications arm for pulling together the potentially disparate pieces into a cohesive milestone -- and especially for throwing in some hardware for some of us traditionalists!

Needing printer industry tweets six months later

In what Ive already confeessed to having been one of my more clueless posts in the history of JimLyonsObservations, its been six months to the day since my infamous "Do we need printer industry tweets?" and the conclusion, actual two conclusions, are the a) yes, we need them, and b) wake up, Lyons, we already have them!

As I pointed out in my July Observations, "Twitter Printing", I was in that very typical early Twitter user confusion state six months ago. Id had an account for some time, couldnt see what the fuss was about, and assumed most everyone else was with me. As it turned out, much printer-related Twitter activity was already under way, and the number has grown significantly. How so you might ask?

Well, like in other web activities of the recent past, certain categories lead in tweeting as well. The printer OEMs are doing some tweeting (for example, @HPIPG, @xeroxevents, and @LexmarkNews), and some of the research houses and analysts come through with some too (e.g. @Infotrends), but the champs are split among the traditionally active bloggers, both growing and established (see @greg_walters, @artpost, @driessen, Greg_VDQ, and the irrepressible @databazaar) and those who cover commercial printing as well as some of those participants (@neenahpaper and @whattheythink come to mind).

Just a quick look at these 10 or so Twitters accounts (all among my 1,000 or so "followed" accounts) shows a range of one or two orders of magnitude in their numbers of followers and tweets (or "updates"). Its clearly still a developing area, but I have visions of maintaining a regular "printer industry members on Twitter" listing, much like those of @KentHuffman and his Marketing-related Twitter lists.

So printer-industry tweeters, please make your presence known, and thanks for all those great tweets!

Symantecs Project Guru great target marketing

I found a great column by Christopher Breen at PC.World online, "Remotely Fixing the Family Printer", that really "hit home" with its real-life transcript going through just what the title suggests.

The experience took me back to last months Demo Conference and the Symantec (NASDAQ SYMC) presentation of their "Project Guru" solution. While I dont yet have direct experience with the solution, I do have direct experience with being the family "guru" when it comes to tech support. "Project Guru" was the subject of some favorable Demo reviews, and again, while not being able to speak to its market success to date, the definition of its customer and the need, i.e. giving assistance and tools the one family member who inevitably gets called on to be "tech support" for the rest of the clan.

Heres a snippet from Breens column that illustrates the idea:

Me: Is the printer plugged in to both the power outlet and your computer?

Them: I didnt touch it.

Me: I know. But its plugged in, right?

Them: It worked last week.

See the column for the rest of the transcript of the ultimately successful help session!
